Tsumiki
Personality: The most obvious thing about Tsumiki Mikan upon meeting her is that she has some pretty heavy issues going on. Without having to actually do anything, you’ve probably already made her cry. Sure, you didn’t even get your name out and the waterworks started after some intense staring, but really this is pretty normal. If you give her a moment to calm down, you guys can start talking. Not that the conversation is going to be much better really. A lot of it will consist of apologies, the girl sincerely hoping she hasn’t offended you or bored you to death yet because surely she is. Really, she just doesn’t want you to be angry or hate her! Not that she’s managed to really give you any reasons to do either yet at all...but oh, hey, if those apologies aren’t enough, she could always do something for you to make it up to you! You could write on her if you wanted, she makes a great notepad! Or she could strip…
Mikan has some severe anxiety issues, quite obviously. She’s very easily intimidated simply by the idea of conversation, sometimes having a breakdown before one can even begin. And while she asks you to forgive her, or not to hate her, her fears ultimately stem from not wanting to be ignored. She is willing to do anything for attention, even the attention she may be getting is negative or mentally/physically abusive. She’d rather be your notepad or your punching bag or even dart board than have nothing at all.
She is also extremely scared of angering or offending anyone. A lot of what she says is followed by apologies for talking out of turn, for boring whomever she is talking to, for being so ‘impudent’. Tsumiki feels she needs permission to do a lot of things, and a lot of the things she offers to let people do to her are to get them to laugh, even if it’s at her rather than with her. Because that means they aren’t angry with her.
However, despite all this, if you get the Super High School Level Nurse talking about something she is passionate about - hint it’s probably something medical related - she’ll discuss it at length before realizing that she’s off on a small tangent. Unlike before, where even just a sentence out of place has her apologizing, Tsumiki will go on for a couple minutes before she realizes she was “talking out of turn”. In the same vein, she’s very passionate about what she does and will gladly put all she has into it. Whether it’s something frivolous - such as chasing poor Hinata around with a syringe, one of her favorite things - or something more serious like the well being of her classmates.
In this way, she shows how dedicated she is when she puts her mind to something. And how dedicated she is to the people around her. Despite having minimal knowledge pertaining to autopsies, she’s willing to perform them on the dead bodies of her friends to assist with investigations. Despite being terrified of these people hating her, she nurses them back to health when they need it. When classmates fell victim to “Despair Fever” in Chapter 3, she was there to help try and cure them even if she had no idea how to do so. She does her absolute best to contribute to the survival of them all - not just herself - however she is able.
And in a lot of cases it really helps, because beyond being SHSL Nurse, Tsumiki is extremely intelligent. This shines bright when she talks about her passions, and it’s a requirement for her field of work really. But beyond even that, when she gives suggestions during discussions or trials, they’re usually nothing to be ignored. They’re sound, just perhaps not always right (because let’s be honest, the hero of the games is the player. You have to let the player reach the right answers on their own). And there are things she realizes that, while a little underhanded perhaps, are also indicative of this trait. As a nurse, there are people out there who are weaker than her because they are sick or injured. They need her, and this is important to her for many reasons.
Unfortunately, the underhandedness doesn’t exactly stop there.
During the third chapter of the game, Tsumiki fell prey to what is called “Despair Fever”, an illness which has different effects on each person who is afflicted by it, but all cause some form of Despair. In her case? She gained her memories of her days in SHSL Despair back, and her bright mind quickly became a dangerous weapon. She gave the characters what is arguably one of the most difficult trials in the game. She almost succeeded.
Despair Fever showcased how cunning and deceitful the girl could be. She was likely terrifying in SHSL Despair, all things considered. She acted as normal as she could, helping to throw suspicion off herself easily. But it wasn’t just the act that kept them from suspecting her. The entire murder she committed and how she did so was ingenious, from videotaping the “victim” hanging herself to make it seem like a suicide bi-product of the Despair Fever that infected them to making the crime scene look like a locked room murder, making it nearly impossible for her to be the culprit. All it took was a little adhesive and a broken drum stick to throw them off her trail. She even went so far as to obscure the time of death, simply be raising the temperature of the room. Even when the only two people who would be able to determine that were Monobear and herself.
She is obviously a critical thinker, though this shone through best during this chapter. Every part of the murder was carefully planned, and she clearly went over any potential problems very thoroughly so as to erase them before they could arise. During the trial itself, she was terribly manipulative of the others. Where before she would seek out the abuse of others, here she would call them out on it, using the way they “bullied” her as reasoning for why they were accusing her. She used her fragile personality to try and fool her classmates.
In the end, she was caught (again, gotta let the hero win), but she didn’t mind. Because she was going to be executed, allowing her to see the person she loved once more. This person is heavily implied to be Junko Enoshima herself - founder of SHSL Despair - and is stated to be the first person to show Tsumiki any real kindness. Before Junko, not a single person would give her the time of day. The way she was treated was horrible, one of her own classmates being one of the worst offenders. In her free time events, she tells Hinata that she’d love for him to talk to her again, because it’s been a long time since she last had a normal conversation. Part of the reason she became SHSL Nurse was due to how she had to tend herself when she was young, because no one would help her when she was hurt. Literally no one seemed to care about her.
What likely lead her to join SHSL Despair was the love and positive attention Junko showed her combined with the despair caused by the fact that it took her abusing herself to earn any kind of attention at all from everyone else in her life.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Tsumiki is the SHSL Nurse, meaning she has a wide variety strengths lying in the medical field. Anyone who wouldn't want a nurse as talented as her on their team is an idiot, honestly. From simple sprains to needing an autopsy, this girl can perform them all. As you would guess from this, she's very intelligent.
Aside from medical knowledge, there are moments where she's obviously smarter than she lets on, giving helpful suggestions when her group needs it. When afflicted with "Despair Fever", she used this intelligence and cunning to plot out a very complicated, almost perfect murder that almost got her off the island. She manipulated her classmates during the trial. She almost won.
Tsumiki is a very kind person, wanting to help others when they are sick or injured, even if she believes they may not like her at all. Her determination also lends itself to this, as she refuses to give up on someone no matter how far gone they may seem.
One of her biggest and likely most crippling weaknesses is her low self-esteem and low self-worth. In her mind, nobody likes her and she will do anything to herself - no matter how painful or humiliating - to change their minds. She has extremely high levels of social anxiety, sometimes so nervous she runs away from conversation or cries in response to it.
She's so passive that she's to the point of submissiveness, bowing to anyone who assumes authority over her. Her personality, over all, is very fragile, which does nothing good for her either. All of this has brought heavy depression to her, which she constantly struggles with.

First Person Sample: [The video turns on and a very nervous looking girl is on the screen. She stares at the screen for a few moments, seemingly wanting to say something, but eventually tears well up at the corners of her eyes and she turns the feed off.]
[About five minutes later, she shows up again, wiping at her eyes but looking to be over whatever...that was before. An Audino is beside her, comforting her and trying to encourage her from the looks of it, so finally she takes a deep breath and speaks.]
E...excuse me. I...I don't know where I am.
[She's obviously extremely distressed by this, fresh tears making their appearance on her cheeks.]
I know I was ju...just at Violet. But now I'm lost! I'm lost, and I don't know what to do!! The map doesn't cover this area at all!!
[The Audino pats her arm as she simply begins crying openly into her hands, imploring to any Pokemon on the network for help, because she's not sure if her trainer's going to be able to get it all that well on her own...]
Third Person Sample: This wasn't so bad, honestly. As terrifying as all of this was, she found something she could do. Something that was familiar and wasn't scary in the least; Something she could just focus on instead of worrying about everything and everyone else in the world. Patients were easy to deal with, and Pokemon, she was quickly learning, weren't as harsh as humans were. She smiled down at the Mankey on the gurney.
"Don't worry. We'll have you feeling better soon." It wasn't a serious case at all - the poor little guy just ate something it shouldn't have, and was feeling pretty horrible because of it - but Tsumiki was as reassuring as she was with any patient. That was her duty as a medical assistant! That was her duty as SHSL Nurse, even if she was working with Pokemon and not people...Did they have clinics for people here? Perhaps that was something she should look into next once she'd settled in more.
She was in charge of some of the more mundane things, which - while she could do these things in her sleep and was far more professionally trained - suited her fine. She made sure the patients were comfortable, calm and properly taken care of. They wouldn't be scared with her around, and they wouldn't feel even a prick of pain. She would be there for their admittance and recovery, and she was enjoying the work thoroughly.
Especially the parts that dealt with syringes.
"You really shouldn't eat apricorns, you know," came her light-hearted chastising as she helped the Mankey into the bed he was assigned. When there was a couple of burbled responses, she giggled a little. "Just remember to look before you eat next time, okay? Nurse Joy will be in to see you shortly, and you'll be back to your old self in no time!" She gave the monkey a fond pet before exiting the room. She alerted Nurse Joy that the patient was ready and headed to help with the next patient, humming happily as she went.
